New Forest Equestrian Association

The NFEA was formed in 1993 in order to refute allegations made in a Forestry Commission Report that horse riders were the prime cause of erosion and damage in the New Forest.
Although the numbers of horses and riding schools had decreased dramatically over the preceding 20 years, the huge impact of increased numbers of visitors including cyclists over the same period was ignored, and the Forestry Commission proposed several punitive measures aimed solely at horse riders and riding schools.

These included charging for a licence or permit for the traditional freedom to ride on the New Forest, restriction of access, and various other controls.

As a result of the NFEA’s research and negotiations, backed by legal expertise from within its membership of over 1,200, the proposals were subsequently withdrawn.

To preserve the tradition of freedom to ride in the New Forest without charge or restriction of access.

To liaise with the Forestry Commission, English Nature and other statutory bodies in the conservation of the New Forest and its wildlife.

To represent all who seek to ride in the New Forest.

The committee comprises local people with interests in a variety of activities associated with horses and ponies who deal with specific activities involving the Forestry Commission, New Forest District Council and English Nature. We are also represented on the New Forest Consultative Panel and the Recreational Users Committee.

There is an annual subscription of just £5.00 per person, although additional voluntary donations are always very welcome and will be acknowledged.

Please support us in continuing the traditions of the New Forest.

For membership and further information please send a stamped addressed envelope with cheques made payable to:"New Forest Equestrian Association."
