What is & Who Runs the NFED?

Launched in 1999, the NFED (short for New Forest Equine Directory, often referred to as N-FED) began as a local equestrian information resource for the New Forest and surrounding areas. While our mission remains unchanged, the reach of the site has grown significantly as word has spread.

The NFED is run by Steve and Claire Kitcher as part of the CK Art–NFED partnership, based at our home in the New Forest. [Click here to meet the team.]

To ensure fast, reliable service, we rent a dedicated server in London for both the NFED and CK Art websites. While more costly than shared or cloud hosting, this setup provides exceptional performance and support—especially when things go wrong.

As a small hobby business, the NFED must cover its own costs to stay afloat. Unlike most websites, we don’t rely on third-party advertising to generate revenue or boost profits. This keeps the site free from intrusive pop-ups and clutter; any adverts you see are from NFED advertisers.

We charge modest fees for classified ads and business listings to keep the site viable. These charges are deliberately kept low to maintain a small-scale operation and stay below the VAT threshold. We're not building an empire—just offering a valuable service to like-minded equestrian enthusiasts. And while our prices may be low, don’t be misled: thousands of regular users across the UK rely on the NFED every day.

There are four main sections:

1: Classifieds
Our unique classified system has been adapted and grown over the years to satisfy our needs. It is very fast, reliable and kept as simple as possible, whilst still providing the features that people expect. All ads are categorised and in date order. To maximise exposure, they can be viewed by anyone, so there is no need to join or open an account to advertise, view or contact an advertiser. Safety is paramount; advertiser details are hidden by default and enquiries sent through the system are private, but monitored for suspicious activity. Paid or free ads can all have up to four photos, suitable paid ads will also be featured. For security reasons, maps are not used on the classifieds only the nearest town and county are shown.

2: Service Directory
The Service Directory is the place to find or advertise an equestrian or countryside business or service. The original “D” in NFED, although the entire directory system was replaced in 2015. Services can be found by category, location, name or search, they can be ordered by date or alphabetically, forward or reverse, it really is a fully featured directory. We do charge a nominal fee to be listed, but this ensures that the directory is kept up to date. We have learnt that offering a free directory just encourages false or outdated entries, which devalues the entire system. The directory also has a business news section for the use of our advertisers.

3: Event Diary
The event diary is provided free of charge for events organised by a BRC recognised club or non-profit organisation (Pony Club, BHS, BD, YFC, Hunt, etc), or held primarily in aid of a registered charity, club funds or good cause.
Commercial events, i.e. events held by a venue, individual or entity as part of their business or for profit or gain are only accepted with a corresponding Standard Listing in the NFED Services Directory.

4: Information Exchange
Several news pages that are either updated with news from around the area or our business advertisers. We also have Racing and World Equine news pages that update automatically from various trusted sources.
