What is & Who Runs CK Art–NFED?Launched in 1999, the NFED (short for New Forest Equine Directory, often referred to as N-FED) began as a local equestrian information resource for the New Forest and surrounding areas. The mission hasn’t changed, but the audience certainly has—word of mouth has carried the site far beyond the Forest, and today it’s used daily by riders and horse‑owners across the UK. The NFED is run as part of the CK Art–NFED partnership from our home in the New Forest. Steve Kitcher built and runs the NFED, while CK Art showcases original paintings and prints by Claire Kitcher. Over the years we’ve also taken on a number of related ventures, including event photography (Event Images), picture framing, and the Forest Images website. All of these projects have operated under the CK Art–NFED partnership, using shared accounts and a single partnership name. [Click here to meet the team.] To keep the site fast and reliable, we rent a dedicated server in London for both the NFED and CK Art websites. It’s more expensive than shared or cloud hosting, but the performance and support are exceptional—especially when something goes wrong. As a small hobby business, the NFED needs to cover its own running costs. Unlike most websites, we don’t rely on third‑party advertising to generate revenue or chase profit. That means no intrusive pop‑ups or clutter. Any adverts you see are from genuine NFED advertisers. We charge modest fees for classified ads and business listings to keep the site viable. These prices are deliberately kept low to maintain a small‑scale operation and stay below the VAT threshold. We’re not building an empire—just providing a useful, affordable service for like‑minded equestrian enthusiasts. And while our prices may be low, don’t be fooled: thousands of regular users across the UK rely on the NFED every day. There are four main sections: 1: Classifieds Our bespoke classified system has evolved over many years to meet the needs of the NFED community. It’s fast, reliable, and intentionally simple, while still offering the features people expect. All ads are clearly categorised and displayed in date order. To maximise exposure, the entire system is open to everyone — there’s no need to register or create an account to advertise, browse, or contact an advertiser. Safety is a priority. Advertiser details are hidden by default, and all enquiries are sent privately through the system, where they’re monitored for suspicious activity. Every ad, whether paid or free, can include up to four photos, and eligible paid ads are also featured for additional visibility. For security reasons, we don’t use maps on the classifieds. Instead, ads show only the nearest town and county. 2: Service Directory The Service Directory is the place to find — or advertise — an equestrian or countryside business or service. It’s the original “D” in NFED, although the entire system was rebuilt in 2015 to create a more modern, flexible directory. Services can be browsed by category, location, or name, or found quickly using the search function. Listings can be ordered by date or alphabetically, in either direction, making it a genuinely full‑featured directory. We charge a small fee for listings, which helps ensure the directory stays accurate and up to date. Experience has shown that free directories quickly fill with outdated or false entries, which undermines the whole system. The directory also includes a Business News section exclusively for our advertisers, giving them a simple way to share updates with the NFED community. 3: Event Diary The Event Diary is free to use for events organised by a BRC‑recognised club or non‑profit organisation (such as Pony Club, BHS, BD, YFC, Hunts, and similar groups), or for events held primarily in aid of a registered charity, club funds, or another good cause. Commercial events — those run by a venue, individual, or business for profit or financial gain — are accepted only when the organiser has an active Standard Listing in the NFED Services Directory. 4: Information Exchange Other Sections E-Mail Newsletter The popular NFED E‑Mail Newsletter is sent out every Tuesday morning. It includes the latest updates, news, and events added over the previous seven days, along with new directory listings and business news. It also features the headlines of all offered adverts from the past week, plus forthcoming events for the next two weeks from the Event Diary. The newsletter is completely free of charge. Anyone can subscribe via the NFED homepage, and unsubscribing is just as simple — one click on the link included in every newsletter. Social Media
Over the years we’ve added a wide range of information and specialist‑interest pages. Some are regularly updated, others have been archived, and a few are a little out of date but still well worth a read. The best way to discover them is simply to click a few links and explore. Enjoy.
