Traditional Cob Cross New Forest Pony Gelding | 14hh | 6 Years Old

Spanner has been with his owner since he was just 16 days old, so this is an incredibly difficult decision and finding him the right home is my absolute priority.

He is a 14hh Traditional Cob x New Forest gelding, by a Traditional Cob sire out of an Appaloosa x New Forest mare. He’s now 6 years old and has been produced slowly and correctly, meaning he is still relatively low mileage for his age with plenty of potential for someone to continue his education.

He was lightly backed as a 4-year-old before spending time hacking and building his confidence. As a 5-year-old he began schooling more consistently, and this year he has been introduced to jumping, attended clinics, competed in a couple of dressage tests, taken part in in-hand agility and enjoyed local and charity shows. He has taken everything in his stride with a willing attitude.

His dressage scores of 63% and 64% were achieved despite us not practising the tests beforehand—and he’d never even ridden 10m circles prior to the day! With more consistent schooling and someone wanting to focus on dressage, I genuinely think he could excel.

Although he has only been introduced to jumping a handful of times, he has shown real promise. With the right person to continue his education, I genuinely believe he could turn his hoof to anything. He has all the attributes to become a fun, competitive all-rounder and could make a fantastic Pony Club or Riding Club pony in time.

At present, Spanner is a little tricky to get on. Due to rider circumstances, he has not been ridden for the last five weeks, so he has become slightly fidgety when mounting. This is something that will need patient, consistent handling from someone knowledgeable about bringing on young horses.

Spanner is a lovely horse to have around. He is good to catch, good to clip, hacks happily both alone and in company, is sensible in traffic and open spaces, and has always been ridden in a snaffle.

Loading is currently a work in progress. He’s improving with patient, consistent handling, and I’m confident this will continue in the right hands.

He does have mild sweet itch, which is easily managed. Electric fencing can be used for Spanner, but it must be switched on. His sweet itch has been reflected in his asking price.

Spanner would suit someone looking for a genuine young horse who has been given the time to mature rather than rushed. He would suit a knowledgeable home, perhaps with a gutsy teenager or small adult, who enjoys producing young horses and wants to continue his education. In return, they will have a genuine, versatile pony with a lovely future ahead of him.

A beautifully put together boy with a nice nature and lovely movements. 13yrs. He was brought as an unbacked 5yr old by his previous owner who got him profesionally backed, then they done RC clinics and pleasure rides upto 42km, at the end of the sesson to early winter he started to trip and stumble slightly. I brought him as a 6yr old in march 2020 he was also checked over by two diffrent vet practices and they couldnt find anything wrong with him so we put it down to very slight muscle fatigue which Arabs can suffer with when rushed into work to quickly or by doing to much to soon. He was turned him away for a year mainly due to covid but also to mature, then brought slowly back into work and this seemed to of worked, as hes never tripped or stumbled with me, but not long after i fell ill so his time off was extended. Now i am no longer able to ride which has resulted to him having even longer off from being ridden. This long break was through no fault of his own, it is completly due to my health and not been able to find anyone suitable to ride. He is completely sound, has no lumps and bumps. At present he is living out 24/7 and with rugs on in winter, but hes also been stabled at night and turned out in day and he doesnt have any stable vices. He is currently being brought slowy back into work focusing on ground in-hand work, he is proving to be highly intelligent, responsive to voice aids and willing to learn, but hes still not been ridden due to not having a rider. He is good to catch, farrier and groom etc. He is green/novice under saddle but this is due to the lack of ridden education. He is a typical Arab who is smart, sensitive, forward thinking and eager to please. He is not suitable for a green/novice or nurvous rider. He requires an experienced confident and sympathetic rider/handler who understands the breed to continue his groundwork and slowly bring him back under saddle. This is a heartbreaking sale due to my on going health circumstances. 5 star home is needed for this special boy.

Done a little hunting towards the end of last season, been out to arena hires, XC schooling and training shows. Jumping a course inc arena eventing fences and is bold and brave to a fence. Plenty of scope and the type that wants to leave the fences up.

Working well on the flat with good paces and a rocking horse canter, no reason he couldn’t go on to do some dressage and he would certainly turn some heads.

Hacks alone or in company and enjoys a canter in open spaces. Been good in the traffic we’ve met and with the farm machinery around here.

I am looking for a loan home for my horse and would be happy for him to move to a suitable yard within the local counties.

I have owned him for the last 2.5 years, having taken him straight from racing. Although he was technically a racehorse, it's fair to say he wasn't cut out for it. He only started once, where he was pulled up after being so far behind the field, and he also ran once in a point-to-point.

When he first came to me, I gave him around six months off to be a horse. He lived as a companion to another horse we were rehabilitating, allowing him to gain weight, relax, and leave racing behind. Since then, he has been brought back into work gradually and has been a pleasure. I've taken things slowly with him, because I adore him and wanted to do everything slowly.

The majority of his work is hacking, which he enjoys. We've hacked in all sorts of places, and he is exceptionally sensible. He is fantastic in traffic, unfazed by windy weather, wheelie bins, livestock, farm machinery and the sort of things you'd expect a horse to question. Sheep, cows, llamas – none of them bother him. The one thing to note is that he much prefers hacking alone. He can become tense when ridden in company. I have no doubt this could be improved with consistent work, but as I'm based on a small yard and generally hack solo myself, it hasn't been something I've focused on.

He schools once a week and is occasionally lunged, but hacking is where he is happiest. He is always kept up to date with McTimoney treatments and physiotherapy, as I feel that's especially important for a larger horse with a racing background.

In every other respect, he is wonderfully straightforward. He is easy to catch, load, clip, shoe (although he does like to leave plenty of droppings for the farrier!), have his teeth done and handle on the ground. He is excellent coming in from and going out to the field, has no stable vices and is happy in the field. He currently lives out at night, as that's the routine in our yard, but he also spent around seven weeks stabled overnight last year without any change in behaviour. I suspect he would happily live out full-time, provided he had adequate shelter, feed, and was kept warm enough.

He is an easy keeper and currently lives on pony nuts and Fibre Light chaff. He is a genuine yard favourite, and whenever I've been away I'm regularly told what a "superstar" he is and what a lovely horse he is to look after. He really is kind, affectionate and loves attention. Grooming is one of his favourite things, and he'll happily stand that for hours.

While he is incredibly sensible 98% of the time and is much more whoa than go, he is still a large, fairly young Thoroughbred. Like any horse, he can occasionally have a sharp moment, so I am looking for someone with Thoroughbred experience who is a confident, capable rider. He rarely spins or reacts dramatically, but I want him to be with someone who understands the breed and can ride him sympathetically.

Because finding the right home is so important to me, I will only consider enquiries from experienced homes that I have thoroughly vetted, and I will retain his passport throughout the loan.

Please do not get in touch if you are a novice rider or weigh over 11½ stone. For reference, I am 5ft 5in and approximately 9 stone in the photographs, although I do have long legs.

I have tried to be completely honest about him because he deserves the very best home. He is a genuinely lovely horse with so much to offer, and I would much rather be upfront about every aspect of him than have anyone's expectations unmet. If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask. Could also be a companion as he is so good in the field!
